Assignment 4 ; Narrative & Photography

'It is important not to think of contemporary photography's affinity to figurative painting as simply one of mimicry or revivalism; instead, it demonstrates a shared understanding of how a scene can be choreographed for the viewer so that a story is being told.'

Sarah Jones.
A British artist, Cotton states ;

'Her portrayal of young girls posed in interior's are consciously constructed out of the tension between the authentic and the projected, both in terms of imagery and experience.'

In reading ''The Photograph as Contemporary Art"I found that Cotton makes a point on how Sarah Jones uses symbolism to draw from to get her strategies across to emphasise her point.

'The Guest Room', 2003

Cotton states how Sarah's use of symbolism is evident as the room that isn't hers, and how the representation of the bed becomes a motif. Whilst the horizon bulk creates also trigger associations with the formal compositions of land and seascapes.
Jones photography has orchestrated for the photographic shoot, while at the same time appearing to be drawn from the pre-photographic gestures of reclining female figures in the histories of painting and sculpture.

Here is a like to Sarah Jones website, I am providing this as I wasn't able to upload the image to mu blog.

Gregory Crewdson.

American artist stated that he uses elaborately constructed melodramas influenced by his memory of childhood. In his twilight series he worked with a cast and crew to create a paranormal and psychological feel to his photographs. He uses the twilight light as it is best describes the intense feeling he is convering; the lighting shows a transition from the safety/normality of the daylight to the dramatic and uncertanity of the nightime.

I felt that I need to have the quotes from 'The Photograph As Contemporary Art' in order to explain Cottons ideas she is conveying.
